Carthage and West Carthage
Secure $600,000 CDBG Grant
The Villages of Carthage and West Carthage have received notice
that they will receive a $600,000 micro-enterprise grant from the Governor's
Office for Small Cities Community Development Block Grant Program. The project
area for the grant will be the "Main Street" corridor that joins the
two villages. The corridor runs down State Street in Carthage, across the river
and down Bridge Street in West Carthage, down to the intersection with Broad
Street.
The project will fund exterior and interior renovations to commercial
properties; provide revolving loans for small business expansion or working
capital; and assist business owners in the development of business plans and
marketing strategies. The majority of jobs created and retained by the project
must benefit low and moderate income people.
Part of the grant will also fund public improvements that support
economic revitalization of the project area. The Quality Communities Demonstration
(see web link) grant currently underway will give each of the villages ideas
on how to best spend their portion of those funds.
